Medicare Supplement Plans
A Supplement Plan, otherwise known as a Medigap plan, simply pays for costs (20%) that Medicare does not cover. Medicare has deductibles for inpatient hospital services and for doctors office visits. The most popular supplement plan in California is Plan G, simply because it's the most comprehensive. It pays everything that Medicare does not pay except for your annual Part B Deductible of $195. One Hospital stay for a week could result in $200,000 in charges of which you are responsible for 20% or $50,000. The cost of a Plan G Medicare Supplement plan in Fresno California for a 65 year old, non-smoker, is about $115 per month. Gap plans are fully underwritten, which means you can be denied coverage based on your health history or medication consumption. There are several "guaranteed issue" periods that you can take advantage of including when you first turn 65, please call 707 328-5859 or email at jstall61@gmail.com for details.
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDP)
Also known as Rx Plans, these type of insurance policies protect you against high-prices medications. Medicare requires that anyone who has Medicare A and B have credible drug coverage. There are over 30 choices in California alone, but typically the best fit for most people are the ones that cover the medications you're currently taking, at the lowest cost, regardless of the company issuing the policy. If you decide not to purchase a PDP plan, you will start accruing monthly penalties of $.34, compounded for each month you don't enroll 6 months after you turn 65. Once you do enroll, these compounded penalties are deducted from your Social Security check for life. PDP plans typically cost between $14 to $75 per month, depending on the type of coverage you require, number of medications you're taking, shopping preferences, and which Tier each medication falls into. Don't worry, I'll figure all this out for you and present you with several choices. Most clients spend less than $30 per month for their plans.
Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)
An alternative to Original Medicare is called Medicare Part C. These are bundled plans that include coverage for Doctors and Hospitals as well as Drug Coverage, all in one. We have over 10 different Medicare Advantage options in Fresno California for 2020. You have your choice between PPO's and HMO's. Advantage Plans typically include greater benefits and lower costs vs a traditional Supplement + PDP plan structure. Medicare Advantage Plans are also guaranteed issue at any age, and you can only be denied coverage if you have End Stage Renal disease (stage 5 kidney disease).
